The Youth Council will play an integral role in shaping the development of features like the Youth Portal and reporting tools. TikTok also offers a range of resources, including its Safety Center, which caters to over a million users monthly with essential guides on issues such as bullying and body image (TikTok, 2023). To encourage greater parental involvement, TikTok promotes the use of Family Pairing to new users aged 35 and above. Moreover, TikTok is planning to launch over ten in-app media literacy campaigns throughout the year 2024 (TikTok, 2023).
A TikTok representative emphasized that listening to feedback from teens and their parents is of utmost importance when it comes to safety work. A Youth Council member expressed enthusiasm about the prospect of creating a safer app while fostering greater understanding and communication between people (TikTok, 2023).
According to experts like Carolyn Bunting from Internet Matters, the input of the Youth Council is essential in ensuring that safety tools are effectively utilized by both teens and their parents. The research also underscores the importance of educating both demographics on existing safety features (Bunting, C., 2023). TikTok intends to tackle this issue by incorporating in-app messaging and promoting media literacy initiatives.
